Why do you like Mel? [Jul. 24th, 2008|12:33 pm]

A couple of days ago, I asked over at doctorwho, why Mel is so unpopular. Its something that I can sort of understand why people don't like her, but surely there are companions Adric and Martha who are a lot more annoying than Mel. Some silly reasons included:

~ Her fashion sense (It was the 80s! Come on!)
~ She is ginger.
~ Her scream.

As far as I have seen, every single Doctor Who companion has screamed at some point (except maybe Harry, I can't remember him screaming. I might need to refresh my memory though), Mel just happens to have the best (and loudest!) scream. Ginger? Well if that was the case, Donna and Turlough should be just as unpopular as Mel.

As I have heard a lot of reasons why she is so unpopular, I want to know why people do actually like Mel.

I've only seen one of her episodes, Paradise Towers, but I've listened to all of her audio adventures with the Seventh Doctor and most of the ones with the Sixth and so far I really do like her. One thing I love about her is that she doesn't constantly ask the Doctor to take her home (one thing that bothered me about Tegan although I started liking her as soon as she stopped asking). Mel is kind and likes to see the best in people. She is positive and doesn't give up. And I do rather like that outfit from Paradise Towers, the 80s were a very 'special' time!

Mel is fun. She's bouncy. Like you said, she's very positive. I love the way she interacts with the Sixth Doctor, not letting him talk down to her, or treat her condescendingly. She stands up for herself, regardless of consequences.

As for the Seventh Doctor (it's been a while since I've seen any of these stories), I remember enjoying the general gaiety those two had. They had lots of fun and were just enjoying traveling together. Nothing dark or serious, just pure fun.

She's a wonderful person! She's a great friend to the Doctor, is always willing to help, doesn't take crap. Her goodbye scene is very sweet. And she's even better on the audios: I love beyond all reason on Bang-Bang-a-Boom, The One Doctor, Catch-1782 and The Juggernauts. (Also, I just noticed, on all of these audios I mentioned someone has a crush on her.)

And she's ginger.

It might be a combination of her scream and her, at times, almost distressing failure to notice what's going on in the world around her. That one instance in Paradise Towers where everyone is like OMG! THERE'S DEATH IN THE POOL! and Pex is like OMG! THERE'S DEATH IN THE POOL! springs to mind (now, I can understand ignoring Pex's advice... but when Pex is smarter than you, that's sad).

Heh.

I love Paradise Towers. And Pex. And Mel. I might be the world's only Pex/Mel shipper (even if I haven't got 'round to writing the fic yet...)

I love Mel, perversely, because it feels like no one else does. I love her for her utterly senseless polka dots which, while blinding, were less exposing than Peri's 80's nightmare wardrobe. I love her for her mockability value (oh come on, there's nothing funner than MSTing Old Who with some friends... while secretly adoring every minute of it). I love love her malleable backstory (note, I've heard only two of her audios to this point so I don't know if her backstory and initial meeting of Six is covered there)

And most of all, I love her because she's sort of the pre-cursor of Donna Noble. Or maybe that's just my weird brain making connections of random?
